Rug Hooking Tour Itinerary (sample)
Day 1 (Arrival) – Arrival into Guatemala City. Ground transportation provided from airport to Antigua, hotel check-in, meet and greet with tour group and guides. Deliver welcome packets. Dinner together at one of our favorite restaurants.
Day 2 – Travel to Panajachel with a stopover at an artisan Cooperative. We will have lunch en route and then meet up with our Maya rug hooking buddies. Together we will take an afternoon boat across Lake Atitlán to the Posada de Santiago in Santiago Atitlán.
Day 3 – All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Posada de Santiago. Hook with your buddy in a workshop facilitated by Mary Anne Wise. Visit a “paca” (second hand clothing store) with your buddy in Santiago Atitlán to source materials for rugs.
Day 4 – All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Posada de Santiago*.
Day 5 – All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Posada de Santiago*.
*Optional visits: walking tour of Santiago Atitlán with guide Delores Ratzan; visit to Jose Tzina, master embroiderer, in his home; shopping in Santiago; visit to Sharing the Dream Elder Center.
Day 6 – The Maya women leave early to return to their homes. Visit to a natural dye and weaving group in San Juan la Laguna on Lake Atitlán. Afternoon boat to Panajachel.
Day 7 – Today we head to Chichicastenango for Guatemala’s largest and most famous artisan market. After lunch we’ll visit a rug hooking community.
Day 8 – Meet up with your buddy for all day rug hooking in Panajachel. Final day with buddies.
Day 9 – Early morning departure for Antigua. Spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful cobble-stoned streets of Antigua. Visit artisan markets, or enjoy a leisurely walk through the city’s majestic ruins.
Day 10 (Departure) – Tour concludes. Transport back to Guatemala City Airport.
