Quiejel is a rural community located in the municipality of Chichicastenango, in the Quiché department of Guatemala. It is home to a predominantly Kʼicheʼ Maya population that maintains a strong connection to indigenous traditions, including the use of the Kʼicheʼ language, traditional clothing, and ancestral customs.
The local economy is based largely on subsistence farming, with crops such as corn and beans being staples. Many residents also engage in handicrafts and weaving, continuing the region’s rich artisanal heritage. Quiejel, like many highland communities, is shaped by communal values and local governance systems that support cultural preservation and community cooperation.
While it is not a major tourist destination, Quiejel is an example of Guatemala’s vibrant indigenous rural life, where tradition and identity remain deeply rooted despite economic and social challenges.
