• About the Tour

    Join Multicolores and enter into the warm, vibrant heart of Guatemala, where you will gain the friendship of Maya women artists through rug hooking. An unforgettable journey of discovery awaits you, an amazing blend of people, culture and education.


    During this ten-day tour you will buddy up with a Multicolores’ rug hooking artist to design and hook a rug the Maya way! Throughout, there will be opportunities to meet the artists in their homes, visit other fiber artists, and shop at some of the best craft markets in Central America. 


    The tour is designed for all levels, from beginner to experienced rug hooker. 


    Whether you are interested in crafts, women’s empowerment, sustainable development or learning about new cultures, this tour is perfect for you. Each tour is limited to 16 participants.

  • Tour Pricing

    The price of the Rug Hooking Tour is $2,975 plus airfare. This price is based on double room occupancy. Single occupancy is available for an additional $500.

    Included
     in the price are airport transfers, all meals (except two on-your-own meals), ground transportation and hotels. The price of the trip includes a $500 tax-deductible donation to support Multicolores’ Programs.

    Not included
     is the round trip airfare to Guatemala City, rug hooking materials, personal expenses (shopping purchases, snacks and alcoholic beverages, etc.).


    In order to secure a place, make a $250 non-refundable deposit by July 31, 2024.

    Final payment is due, on or before October 24, 2024.


    Further information will be sent to participants prior to departure including a list of rug hooking supplies, packing suggestions and some information on traveling in Guatemala.

Tour Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival

Arrival into Guatemala City. Ground transportation provided from airport to Antigua, hotel check-in, meet and greet with tour group and guides. Deliver welcome packets. Dinner together at one of our favorite restaurants.

Day 2

Meet the Buddies

Travel to Panajachel with a stopover at an artisan Cooperative. We will have lunch en route and then meet up with our Maya rug hooking buddies. After introductions and festivities, we will travel to Hotel Villa Santa Catarina located in Santa Catarina Palopó, on the shores of Lake Atitlán.

Day 3

Hotel Villa Santa Catarina

All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Hotel Villa Santa Catarina.

Day 4

Material Sourcing

All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Hotel Villa Santa Catarina*. Visit a “paca” (second hand clothing store) with your buddy to source materials for rugs.
*optional local visits will be scheduled

Day 5

Rug Hooking

All day rug hooking in the grounds of the Hotel Villa Santa Catarina.

Day 6

Lake Atitlán

The Maya women leave early to return to their homes. In the morning we will travel across Lake Atitlán in a private boat to the town of San Juan La Laguna. This community has revived the tradition of natural dyeing and also growing ‘ixcaco’, a natural colored cotton. We will visit a weaving Cooperative and afterwards stroll around the town which is dotted with small art galleries showing Mayan Naïve Paintings and stores selling natural dye products. Afternoon free to relax, rug hook or visit local sites of interest.

Day 7

Home Visits

Learn about Maya culture and the lives of Multicolores’ artists whilst visiting two of the rug hooking groups in their rural villages.

Day 8

Panajachel

Meet up with your buddy for rug hooking in Panajachel. Final day with buddies.

Day 9

Antigua

Early morning departure for Antigua. Spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful cobble-stoned streets of Antigua, visit artisan markets, or enjoy a leisurely walk through the city’s majestic ruins.

Day 10

Tour Concludes

Tour concludes. Transport back to Guatemala City Airport.
