Santiago Atitlán is a picturesque town located on the southern shore of Lake Atitlán in the Sololá department of Guatemala. Surrounded by volcanic mountains—including Volcán San Pedro and Volcán Tolimán—the town is home to the Tz'utujil Maya people, who preserve vibrant cultural traditions, including weaving, traditional dress, and indigenous languages.

Santiago Atitlán is known for its deep spiritual and historical significance. It is the center of worship for Maximón, a folk saint blending Catholic and Maya beliefs. The town also played a key role during Guatemala’s civil war, with tragic events such as the 1990 army massacre, which led to the military’s withdrawal after international attention.

Today, Santiago Atitlán is a cultural and artistic hub, attracting visitors with its stunning natural beauty, artisan markets, and strong indigenous identity.
