"The Awakening of a Mother"
Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking
By Maria Sacalxot Coti
My inspiration for creating this work comes from motherhood. On my journey of self-discovery, I realized that my identity is deeply intertwined with being a mother. Since my children came into the world, something unique and luminous awakened within me: my past self and my present self met, recognizing and embracing each other. It was as if every experience I had before becoming a mother found a new meaning.
Together, past and present gained new dimensions: the past gave me roots, and the present gave me wings to love and protect with a renewed heart.
Today, my life has a deeper meaning thanks to the immense love that blossomed within me the moment I welcomed them into the world.
In my self-portrait, I depict myself joyful, surrounded by birds, flowers, and butterflies—symbols of the sweetness and tenderness of a mother who, every day, expands her heart to nurture and care for her children.
