"The Brilliance of Rebirth"
Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking
By Lucía Encarnación Solís Chuc de Toxcón
In our Mayan worldview, the rhombus—or diamond—is part of our sacred iconography. Among its many meanings, it symbolizes the connection between the sky, the earth, and the underworld. I chose to include it in my portrait to represent how, within ourselves, we too can inhabit these three worlds.
In my own life, I have experienced many symbolic deaths, and I have also felt myself being born anew. The person I am today is the reflection of the many struggles I have faced. Today, I feel like a diamond—strong, radiant, and reborn from the trials life has set before me. A being who will continue to walk forward with courage.
