Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking

By Gladys Fabiola Sacalxot

In my self-portrait, I gaze toward the horizon, where the volcanoes awaken with the first light of dawn. Their powerful presence is bathed in radiant sunlight—a light that touches all of us who live and labor on this land. It is a land shaped by the hands of hardworking people, where each day begins with hope, perseverance, and deep gratitude—for life and for family.

My self-portrait represents me as a woman full of dreams, and with a noble heart, a fighter capable of adapting to life’s circumstances, a woman who draws inspiration from her children—her most precious treasures—and who is both imperfect and perfect.

My traditional dress tells a story—not just mine, but the story of my country, Guatemala. Through its vibrant colors and intricate figures, I seek to share a glimpse of this beautiful land: multicolored, rich in nature, alive with tradition, and full of customs passed down through generations.

My art has been a mirror, showing me my strength when I could not see it, and my worth when I doubted it. It taught me that we, as Maya women, are creators of beauty and keepers of culture.
