"Flutterings of Sweetness"

Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking

By Lidia Griselda Pich Chopén

While creating my portrait, I reflected on the sweetness of life. At this stage, I have come to understand that when we turn our gaze toward the beauty within ourselves, existence becomes fuller and more joyful. Sweetness is not naivety; it is a conscious choice to nurture peace in a world that often leans toward conflict.

In my work, I depicted a hybrid bird, born from the union of the quetzal and the hummingbird, two species endemic to Guatemala that, for me, represent wisdom, harmony, and spiritual balance. The quetzal, with its majestic plumage, reminds me that freedom is achieved through calm; the hummingbird, with its tireless flight, inspires me to savor the moment and never give up.

This quetzal-hummingbird is my reflection: a reminder that true balance is found when we embrace sweetness, cultivate inner peace, and share it with the world. I believe that only in this way can we dream of a place where everyone lives in harmony.

"...when we turn our gaze toward the beauty within ourselves, existence becomes fuller and more joyful."
