"Nectar of Harmony"
Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking
By Micaela Churunel Ajú
In the Maya worldview, the hummingbird, or tzunun, is a divine messenger, a bearer of vital energy, and a symbol of the ability to overcome any obstacle. For me, this tiny being has been a quiet and constant guide on my journey of self-discovery.
In moments of illness or difficulty, its presence has come like a whisper from the universe: whenever a hummingbird crosses my path, I feel a spiritual strength urging me to keep going and not give up. In the flutter of its wings, I find a reminder that life, though fragile, is also beautiful.
In creating my portrait, I wanted to capture this deep connection, because the tzunun has shown me that I am stronger than I ever imagined. It has taught me that challenges are not enemies but teachers that invite us to grow, and that every moment, no matter how difficult, holds a treasure of wisdom.
Today, I live with the certainty that, like the hummingbird, I can face storms while pausing to drink the nectar of life and cherish the fact that I am alive.
