"Radiance in Her Own Light"

Art of being: A self portrait in Embroidery

By Ana Berta Cubur Gil

In the Maya worldview, the diamond shape holds a profound meaning: its four equal sides represent balance, symmetry, and permanence. It is a symbol of our parcel of land, the maternal womb, and divine fertility.

When weaving our huipils, we intertwine threads and meanings, projecting our spiritual universe and our connection to the earth into the textiles. For me, this ancestral symbol is deeply connected to my journey of self-discovery. I recognize myself as a woman with her own radiance, seeking harmony amid change, and, like the diamond, grounded at the center while embracing the transformations that life brings.
