Art of being: A self portrait in Embroidery
By Felix Felisa Velasco Castro de Gutiérrez
In my portrait, you can see me surrounded by calla lilies, also known as cartuchos. I chose these flowers because they symbolize the soaring beauty of the soul. In Guatemala, we are fortunate to have an abundance of these blooms, which remind us of the subtle and sacred union between the feminine and nature.
Amid the calla lilies, I appear with blue skin, a metaphor I used to evoke feelings of calm and serenity—emotional states I experienced while embroidering my portrait. At this stage of my life, I am a happy and peaceful grandmother, dedicated to enjoying my grandchildren and sharing that God is love.
