Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking

By Nicolasa Pacay Barán de Barreno

In my portrait, I depicted a mosaic of diamonds, inspired by their profound and expansive meaning in our Mayan worldview. Among their many interpretations, I focused on the four cardinal points, which not only represent geographic directions but also embody the energies that govern our universe.

On my path of self-discovery, it has been essential to reconnect with the wisdom handed down by our ancestors. In it, I find guidance, purpose, and a compass to discover myself and face life’s challenges with courage.

That is why I portray myself surrounded by diamonds—symbols of the guides who walk beside us and illuminate our path each day.

"On my path of self-discovery, it has been essential to reconnect with the wisdom handed down by our ancestors. "
