"Seeing Myself Again"
Art of being: A self portrait in Rug Hooking
By Juana Yolanda Churunel Ajú
While creating my piece, I embarked on a journey into the past to reconnect with my inner child. It was an intimate and transformative process, because I realized that to understand who I am today, I needed to look back and remember the little girl I once was.
In that reunion, I discovered her curiosity, her joy, and her fears. By embracing her, I learned to offer myself the compassion and self-love I had long lacked. This connection allowed me to grow with a new tenderness toward myself and understand that healing doesn’t always mean changing—it can also mean remembering and honoring what has always been in our hearts.
With this work, I want to inspire you to listen to and care for your own inner child. She is still there, waiting for you to see her, embrace her, and give her what your soul needs. Reconnecting with that childhood energy is a powerful way to nurture ourselves, live more fully, and remember that within us there will always be a place for innocence, joy, and unconditional love.
