"The Joy of Being"

Art of being: A self portrait in Embroidery

By Cipriana García Ajpop

How often do we celebrate the achievements of others? And how often do we pause to celebrate our own? This work is a tribute to everything I have accomplished in my life. From the smallest to the greatest, I have learned that it is essential to be my own encourager.

With this piece, I want to convey that we should not wait for someone else to motivate us, love us, or recognize our achievements; that recognition is something we can—and should—give ourselves every day.

When I look at my portrait, I see a hardworking and strong woman, a fighter who has raised her children on her own. Caring, loving, and devoted to their education, she also acknowledges the strength and courage woven into her own story.

"...we should not wait for someone else to motivate us, love us, or recognize our achievements; that recognition is something we can—and should—give ourselves..."
