"Where Calm is Born"

Art of being: A self portrait in Embroidery

By Marina Sahón Juracán de Solís

When the outside world is marked by constant conflict, it is difficult to feel safe—especially for us women, who live with the fear that something might happen when we step outside. In Guatemala, insecurity affects us all.

That is why, during my journey of self-discovery, I chose to focus on what brings me calm and a sense of security. I discovered that art is a powerful tool: it helps me find peace and feel protected, even in the face of adversity.

My message to those who view my work is this: let us not allow the fear caused by wars and conflicts to hold us back. Let us seek hope and cultivate inner peace, so we can share it with those around us. In this way, little by little, we can build communities where women feel safe, supported, and free.
